Writing, reading, guitar, and a book review
Well I still haven’t been writing. I have been trying to learn to play the guitar, something I have started several times before. This time I have been much more serious, and have practiced everyday for three months. And I also have been going back and looking through all the books I have bought over the years and not gotten around to reading.
I have started with my Star Trek collection. I have forty Star Trek books, including every James Blish novelizations and of the TV episodes and many of Alan Dean Fosters novelization of the animated series. I had read everyone except four. As I read I them I will review them here. Starting with Enterprise: The First Adventure by Vonda McIntyre.
This book gets four out of five stars for me, and is well worth the read.
Takes us back to the very first time James T. Krik commands the Big E. It introduces a ton of back story on the relationships of the main cast of characters. It is well done a bit at a time as the story progresses. Back stories and character growth into the characters we already know was very interesting, especially Yeoman Rand and Sulu. The one issue I had with it was the introduction of Checkov with no explanation as to how he could have been on the first excursion, but then missing from the first year of the five year mission to come.
The over felling of these being characters of the characters we know is fully realized, and the original characters are well done, believable, integral parts of the story. I thought the juggler was an especially interesting character. I have also been going back and watching TOS episodes, wishing there were new one to watch. This book feels that niche and makes me feel like I watched the original crew in new adventures. I definitely recommend this book.
