Review: Prime Directive
This book is by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens. I will start by saying I give this 4 out of five stars. Well written, interesting plot and good utilization of the entire crew. New characters are fleshed out and at times insightful. This takes place right after the end of the first five year mission. An unthinkable disaster happens, and Kirk and the crew are separated by Starfleet. They all are driven to find out why it happened. Part one, Aftermath, takes place after the unthinkable happens, then part two. The Last Mission, goes back to the lead up and what happened. The third section, Talin, is them finally finding out what really happened.
Starting with the aftermath seems to have been to build suspense, but I don't think continuing the aftermath story past the first scene was necessary and did not add to the story, but then it was not a real distraction either. Just in my view after the first scene it could have jumped to the beginning and went in chronological order and been a little better.
The first scene was excellent, It is from the view point of a Tellarite and gives interesting insight into the culture. And it does give the shock value, and mystery intended. The First Mission section was good, but with all that had been revealed in Aftermath I kept wanting it to hurry up and get there seeing as I mostly knew where it was going. Still it was written well and kept my interest. Section three, Talin it gets intriguing again as the individual crew members work themselves toward the same destination looking for answers. Toward the end of Talin when they discover what is on the Talin Moon, it reminded me of Ralph M Farley's work. Overall, another fun Trek adventure.
